Ikea recalling about 75,000 safety gates after malfunctions lead to 3 injuries

Global News

WASHINGTON – Ikea is recalling approximately 75,000 safety gates, including some 17,000 in Canada, because the gates may fail to stay closed. Three children have been injured.

The company said that friction between the wall and the pressure-mounted gate is not sufficient to hold the gate in its intended position, posing a fall hazard. The lower metal bar is can also be a tripping hazard.

Ikea said that there have been 18 incidents worldwide. This includes three incidents in which children have been injured as a result of falling down stairs. No injuries have been reported in the U.S.

Judge Judy promotes her new book: www.whatwouldjudysay.com

She’s never been shy to tell others what she thinks, “even as a child,” and Judge Judith Scheindlen isn’t holding back on what she says is keeping women back.

“I think that women for too long allowed other people define what their happiness and reasonable role should be,” said the host of the Judge Judy show.

Scheindlen took a page from her popular website, WhatWouldJudySay.com, to create her new book, ‘What Would Judy Say? Be The Hero Of Your Own Story.’

“In this book I want to have an honest conversation about what it really takes to get what you deserve out of life: how to define your worth and stick to it; how to find the courage to take risks–and how to build your backup plan; how to ignore the chattering classes and create your own destiny,” said Scheindlen.

The book, which is free, is downloadable on electronic devices at WhatWouldJudySay.com.

“If you have a forty year old unmarried daughter you go ugh, but if you have a 40 year old son who is dating around, you go, he’s having a good time,” said Scheindlen.

Her message to women is create a whole you before you let someone else define what you are. Start by establishing a way to earn a living and develop interests in music, art, dance, theater, etc.

“Women are so desperate to stay in a relationship to be defined,” said Scheindlen.

The wife, mother and grandmother is currently in the 19th season of her hit TV courtroom show on FOX.

B.B. King in Hospice Care

Posted on by Featured Image -- 627

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer BB King is currently in hospice care in his home, while his long-time manager and certain of his children are fighting over control of his affairs.  As reported by the BBC in a May 8, 2015 article titled, BB King: Musician’s family lose bid to control his affairs, three of Mr. King’s children filed a lawsuit claiming that his manager, who has power of attorney, was neglecting Mr. King’s medical care and stealing his money.  The court held a hearing, which Mr. King did not attend.  The judge found no evidence of abuse and ruled in favor of Mr. King’s manager:

Mr King has counsel. I don’t have anything here that says he lacks capacity. He has some serious health issues. But he has counsel. If he feels like he’s being taken advantage of, he has remedies.

It appears that Mr. King appointed his long-time manager to look after his finances and welfare when he was no longer able to do so, rather than appoint any of his children.

There are so many stories of this type of elder abuse and of children, friends and counsel fighting over who is best to look after elders, especially when the elders have money. Unfortunately, there is no sure way to know whether those in control are taking advantage.  Even the judges don’t know for sure.

When deciding who will have control over your affairs when you are no longer able, it is important to consider that serious consequences can result.  It’s an important decision – your very life could depend on it.

PA Class Action Lawsuit Filed via: Dimock, Penn. Lawsuit Trial-Bound as Study Links Fracking to Water Contamination in Neighboring County

comm-2 (1)PA Class action lawsuit filed in PA re: Hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas contamination groundwater:

By Steve Horn • Friday, May 8, 2015 – 10:29

A recent peer-reviewed study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has confirmed what many fracking critics have argued for years: hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas can contaminate groundwater.

The study’s release comes as a major class action lawsuit filed in the District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania in 2009 winds its way to a jury trial later this year. The lawsuit over fracking groundwater contamination pits plaintiffs based in Dimock, PA against Cabot Oil and Gas Corporation.

For the study, researchers examined groundwater contamination incidents at three homes in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale basin in Bradford County. As The New York Times explained, the water samples showed “traces of a compound commonly found in Marcellus Shale drilling fluids.”

It’s not the first time fracking has been linked to groundwater contamination in northeastern Pennsylvania. And that brings us back to Dimock, , located in neighboring Susquehanna County.

As DeSmogBlog revealed in August 2013, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had in its possession an unpublished PowerPoint presentation summarizing an Agency-contracted study that linked fracking to groundwater contamination in Dimock, a study the Agency later abandoned and censored.

That presentation was subsequently leaked and published here for the first time.

In its official July 2012 Dimock desk statement, EPA said “there are not levels of contaminants present that would require additional action by the Agency.” As Greenpeace USA researcher Jesse Coleman recently pointed out, EPA has done thebidding of the oil and gas industry on multiple instances during high profile fracking studies.

That PowerPoint presentation and the new Bradford County study could both potentially serve as key pieces of evidence in the U.S. District Court case.

Ely v. Cabot

Initially, the U.S. District Court complaint filed in November 2009 featured many more plaintiffs.

The story of how fracking forever changed Dimock played a prominent role in the documentary films “Gasland” and “Gasland: Part II.” Dimock’s saga also received national and international media coverage by “60 Minutes” and the BBC.
